The Management of the Federal Polytechnic Ado Ekiti has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (SMEDAN) for the establishment of an entrepreneurship village in the Institution.

The partnership between the two Institutions will see SMEDAN giving technical support that will bring about the much needed support, funding and sponsorship from national and international institutions to build the village including a 350-room hostel facility for trainees.

The Rector, Dr. Taiwo Akande who spoke at the Ceremony said the Federal Polytechnic has the best Entrepreneurship and Vocational Centre in Nigeria’s higher institutions and the best named entrepreneurship centre of Excellence in Africa by the United States Agency for International Developments (USAID).

Dr. Akande explained that the proposed entrepreneurship village is designed as a mode of Public, Private Partnership that will be a reference training and skill development hub for youths veterans and senior citizens that will activate inter generational programmes. “This is a unique initiative that present for our dear country, an added skill development support system, resource platform and a model of academic-community/regional partnership with opportunities for employment generation, poverty reduction, resource mobilization as well as elderly/youth engagement leveraging on the higher institution’s entrepreneurship profile and academic protocol”, she added.

The Director of the Centre for Entrepreneurship Development and Vocational Studies of the Institution, Engr. Adetunji Jimoh noted that the Centre was inaugurated in 2010, and has since produced entrepreneurs in different areas of specialization.

He revealed that the Centre currently offers skill acquisition courses including aquaculture, apiculture, snailery, textile design, soap and simple electrical gadgets etc. and added that the Centre was already making money for the Polytechnic through its business arm as it engages in block moulding bakery and confectionary, feed milling, livestock breeding and car wash among other skills.

The Centre has subsisting collaboration and partnership with USAID/WINROCK international farmer to farmer support, Texas Technical University and IITA/World Bank, NYSC SAED Programme and now SMEDAN.

According to the CEDVS Director, Engr. Adetunji Jimoh, the Centre has as part of its verifiable/available assets a 250 – hectares of land available for entrepreneurial activities, just as he also disclosed that the Centre had already trained 17,147 students and artisan between 2011 and 2016.
