Rector Urges Citizens to Cooperate With Government on Anti Corruption War

Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti Dr. Taiwo Akande has disclosed that if Nigeria must be great, all citizens must join hands with the Government to ensure that corruption is reduced to the barest minimum, if it cannot be eradicated completely.

Dr. Akande who gave the charge at the inauguration of the steering committee of the Institution’s branch of the ICPC backed Anti Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) added that “if we are determined as a people to halt corruption and sharp practices it will surely become a thing of the past”.

Speaking through one of her Deputies, Mr. Afolabi Bamidele, the Rector, appreciated the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) for doing an impressive job in its efforts to clean the rot of corruption in the society and combat the “monster” called corruption.

The Rector also stressed that “the truth of the matter is that corruption which is multidimensional goes beyond stealing and looting of Public Funds.”

To curb corruption, she advocated that “there must be a holistic review of our ethical and moral codes as well as the need for serious reorientation and campaign to enlighten Nigerians on the evil effect of all dimensions of  corruption.  “We must all agree that corruption poses a serious threat to our society and corporate existence and is also responsible for the extreme poverty in the land”.

An ICPC stalwart, Mr. Adeniyan Adegbuyi, while addressing the gathering, emphasised that ACTU is not a threat, but an assistance to the Institution to help carry out its primary function, adding that ACTU is the eyes and ears of ICPC in the Institution.  He however appreciated the management for providing necessary resources to enable the inauguration of the ACTU Chapter at Federal Polytechnic Ado – Ekiti.

Another ICPC representative at the occasion, Mr. Okpara Ibean stressed that the Anti Corruption war is not for ICPC to fight alone, but for every individual that needs to play the part of ridding corruption.

He added that, ACTU has the mandate to investigate corruption, educate and sensitize the populace against all forms of corruption through being the watch dogs in compliance to the ethical codes. The highlight of the event was the swearing in of the members of the Anti Corruption Committee by Mrs. Adeoluwa, who administered the oath of allegiance on the eight-member committee.

The Chairman ACTU Federal Polytechnic Ado – Ekiti Chapter Mr. Luke Oluwagbuyi in the acceptance speech, on behalf of his team solicited the cooperation of all members of the Polytechnic Community to help the Committee function better by raising alarms when corruption is indicated.  He registered the commitment, on behalf of the Committee Members to the assignment given to them.
