Don Advises on Proper Water Storage

Nigerians have been advised on the need to embrace proper ways of storing water to reduce the menace of bisphenol A, and other toxins that are harmful to human lives.

An Analytical Chemist and Chief Lecturer in the Department of Science Technology at the Federal Polytechnic, Dr. Peter Ayodele Oyewusi made this known, while delivering the 22nd edition of the Prof E.K. Obiakor Lecture Series of the Polytechnic, held on Tuesday, 7th February, 2017, at the Conference Hall.

Dr. Oyewusi, who spoke on the topic, “Analytical Chemistry: An Invisible Presence in our Everyday Lives” advised that the general public should endeavour to store water using glass or ceramic bottles, noting that if they have to use plastic bottles, “they should use the ones that are free of bisphenol A, an organic synthetic compound that is capable of inducing some cancers in humans”.

The Inaugural Lecturer, who called on Manufacturers and the Organised Private Sector to harness all relevant data generated during Chemical processes in the Nation’s Ivory Towers, appealed to government at all levels to assist Analytical Chemists through adequate funding to procure relevant and up to date equipment at various laboratories.

While commending the Rector, of the Polytechnic Dr. Taiwo Akande for equipping the Polytechnic’s Central Research Laboratory, the Polytechnic Don advised agencies of government like the National Agency for Food Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC)  and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) to form a synergy and live up to expectation by clamping down on producers of packaged water, who were found to have contravened government policies governing production of safe, potable water by ensuring strict compliance to such policies by manufactures.

Dr. Oyewusi, concluded among other recommendations, that government at all levels should devise creative means of providing potable water for the general public, as this would go a long to ensuring zero level outbreak of water- borne diseases in the country.  He further explained that this could be achieved through a new method of water treatment which employs ‘nanotechnology’ and which according to the Don is cheap and could easily be afforded by government and the general public.  He further emphasised that the public too should always employ qualified water Chemists to assist in designing standard operating procedures that would suit their water treatment programme.

In her remarks, the Rector, Dr. Taiwo Akande while acknowledging Dr. Oyewusi’s immense contributions to the field of Analytic Chemistry, especially water analysis and treatment, as well as environmental pollution, advised producers of packaged water to always employ the services of a water analyst to ensure maintenance of quality and standards.

She also advised the relevant Government Organs and Agencies to take the recommendations of the Lecturer seriously as these are measures that will guarantee safety of lives as well as enhance the health and well-being of the citizens.

The Prof E.K. Obiakor Lecturer Series of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado – Ekiti, it would be recalled was inaugurated in June, 2001 by the then Rector, Prof. Olwawumi Ajaja as the Polytechnic’s forum to disseminate knowledge and was named after the founding Rector of the Institution the Late Prof. Edward Kanu Obiakor, who administered the Polytechnic in its formative years between January, 1977 to December, 1985.

The Lecture Series, which offers opportunity for accomplished Chief Lecturers of the Polytechnic to elucidate and profess on their contribution to knowledge in their respective fields had so far been delivered by twenty-one Chief Lecturers of the Polytechnic in sixteen different fields of Learning and Technology with Dr. Oyewusi’s presentation as the twenty second in the series.
