Unions Tasked On Need To Embrace Win-Win Approach To Management – Unions’ Relationship

A Win-Win approach of managing relationship has been recommended as a panacea suitable for adoption by Unions and Managements of Tertiary Institutions for Conflict Resolution, thus putting paid to perennial Unions/Management disputes.

Making the call at an event hosted by the Zone C of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Rector of The Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, Dr. Dayo Oladebeye in a lecture titled “Expectation of Management From Unions:  A Case of ASUP” also emphasized the need for effective communication between Management and Unions in every organisations.

Dr. Oladebeye, who, following the resourceful lecture bagged two Awards at the ASUP Annual Capacity Building Retreat;1,  In Recognition of Your Support  and   2, Leadership Acumen also admonished Unions and Management to always embrace sincerity and commitment to any agreement reached between them.

He further enjoined the Unions to promote active, efficient and effective industrial democracy, while ensuring that Unions’ members are well informed on the Constitution of their Unions as well as Civil/Public Service Rules and other Condition of Service applicable to their employment contract.

Dr. Oladebeye also made it clear as part of his recommendation for the Union to recognize the fact that Management has constraints, which may prevent them from immediately acceding to Unions demands, however stressed that dialogue and consultation should be well embraced by all.

Management and Staff Unions he said work better together “if they both acknowledge that the other has a legitimate and valued purpose.”

He further noted that it is not the number of industrial actions such as strikes and protests carried out that matters, but the number of issues resolved without prejudice, fear or favour with a view to achieving consistent peace and harmonious relationship between Management and Unions as trust and collaboration is the key.

Also, honoured at the workshop alongside the Rector is Dr. Olabisi Olaseinde, the immediate past Chairman of ASUP at the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, who was honoured for his “Integrity in Leadership.”

The ASUP Retreat held at the Miccom Golf Resort, Ada in Osun State was organised by the Zone C of ASUP to equip its leaders and members as a way of building their capacity to achieve the greater interest of all.
