Acquisition of Entrepreneurial Skills, Inevitable - Rector
The need for youths to engage in Entrepreneurial skills has again been emphasized as a means of enhancing their personal growth, having sustainability and contributing to the development of the nation at large.
The Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti, Dr. Temitope Alake who gave the charge at a meeting with the Students’ Union Leaders in his office maintained that the world has gone beyond having a white-collar job as the only source of income. He noted that engaging in various skills would help widen their knowledge and as such become employers of labour in the future.
Dr. Alake noted that the next Academic Session would have a face-lift as the Federal Government is ready to issue certificates of proficiency to students who indulge themselves in entrepreneurial skills acquisition.
The Rector also admonished the Students’ Union Leaders to remain focused on their studies and make judicious use of their positions to proffer solutions to the problems of the students.
Dr. Alake in his reaction to the students’ leaders request for a reduction in the acceptance fees payable by incoming students, said the Management was prepared to accord human face to any decision being taken, as cushioning effects will be introduced, the students comfort will be given paramount attention, as the needful will be done to make sure the fees to be charged is affordable for all.
“All stakeholders will be carried along before the current service charge is reviewed, the review has become inevitable going by the current reality. Whatever will be done will have human face as we are not prepared to do anything to make the students population uncomfortable we must make the best decision to get the best”, Dr Alake assured.
Earlier in their submission, the Union Leaders led by Comrade Sikiru Aderibigbe, NANS Chairman, Ekiti axis, appreciated the Rector and his Management team for having the interest of the students at heart through their constant support at ensuring that they study in an enabling environment.
The NANS Chairman, Ekiti axis, stated that the body had just concluded a seminar on retracing the level of unionism in Ekiti State, to sensitize the Students’ Union Leaders on ways to improve the development of the students they represent. He noted that the seminar which has as its theme, ‘From Protest to Participation’, would help them gain more knowledge and to become problem solvers.
Comrade Aderibigbe had earlier expressed his displeasure on the increment in acceptance fee and on the situation of the Polytechnic road, which has caused many mishaps, imploring the Rector to help call attention of the Federal authority to the deplorable state of the road.
He therefore appealed to the Rector to help reduce the fee by making it affordable for the students and to also use his good office to write to the Federal Government to fast track the repair and possible dualisation of the Polytechnic road.
After the interactive session, the Students’ leaders presented an Award of Excellence to the Rector for being a father figure to the students and for piloting effectively the affairs of the Polytechnic.
