SCHOOL OF SCIENCE & COMPUTER STUDIES
S. A. OSANYINLUSI
Dean, School of Science & Computer Studies
History of the School
The School of Science and Computer Studies, formerly known as School of Technology, was established in 1978 as one of the pioneering schools in the then Federal College of Technology, Akure (later known as Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti) with three pioneering departments; Building Technology, Food Technology and Science Technology. Another department, Glass and Ceramics Technology came into existence in 1986 courtesy of then Czechoslovakia Government, followed by the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science in 1991. In November 1996, the Department of Building Technology was transferred to the newly created School of Environmental Studies.
Right from the inception of the Polytechnic, the school has been in the forefront of scientific and technological research. The school has been recruiting competent staff to aid effective and efficient teaching of practicals and theories in the relevant academic fields. However, the school has embarked on staff development to update knowledge of staff in modern training in scientific and technological fields. This includes long and short-term training in equipment maintenance and acquisition in order to equip and modernize our various laboratories.
The School has also established a central research laboratory which is expected to be equipped adequately to enable it cope with research in Biotechnology among others.
Objectives
- To train National and Higher National diplomats in Computer Science, Food Technology, Glass and Ceramic Technology, Statistics and Science Technology who would be able to contribute meaningfully to the technological and industrial development of the country
- To develop and nurture a culture of academic research in the school among academic members of staff especially in areas of Applied Research and Adaptation of Techniques. This is achieved partly through the organisation of periodic seminars where the outcomes of research activities are presented. The School also encourages departments to organise national conferences and workshops.
